Take the self-check

Living with ADHD Procrastination

Why can't I start the thing that actually matters?

You are not lazy. You are stuck on the start.

The short version.

01

The important ones are the hardest to start

A task that does not matter costs nothing to get wrong. An important one arrives loaded with consequence, and your brain reads that load as danger.

02

Starting is its own job — and it can fail

Task initiation is an executive function, like working memory. In ADHD it fires unreliably. Wanting to start and being able to start are different jobs.

03

Knowing what to do is not the same as doing it

You can name the task, break it into steps, put it in three different apps and still not move. The plan was never the missing piece. The first second is.

04

Avoiding it makes it heavier

Put it off, feel relief, then dread, then shame. Tomorrow the task carries all of that on top of the work. That is why day four is harder than day one.

05

Shrink it until it is not worth arguing with

Not "do the taxes" — open the folder. Not "write the email" — type the name in the To field. Make the first move so small that refusing it feels silly.

06

Leave the start where you will trip over it

Out of your head and into the room. The file left open. The shoes by the door. Do not ask yourself to remember to begin.

07

Borrow someone else's starting signal

A friend on a call. A timer set for five minutes. A room where other people are working. An external start is easier to obey than one you generate.

You did not fail to care. You failed to start — and starting is the part you can fix. Dump the rest into my.adhd and get one thing back.
