Living with ADHD Distraction

Why do you get distracted by everything?

It's not that you've got no discipline. It's that everything's calling you at once.

The short version.

01

Your brain's hunting for fuel, not running away

The second a task goes boring, an ADHD brain goes looking for something with a pulse. That's not you being stubborn. It's hungry, and your phone's always got snacks.

02

"One sec" is never one sec

One notification, one reply, back to work. But every switch, your brain needs a few minutes to find where it was. Ten quick looks and an hour's just gone.

03

The loudest distraction is in your head

Honestly, it's usually not the phone. It's the thought. "Wait, did I pay that bill?" Feels urgent. It can wait an hour. It almost always can.

04

Catch it, write it down, get back to it

That thought doesn't need dealing with now. It just needs somewhere to sit. One line, somewhere fixed, and it stops knocking. Back to the task, not the bill.

05

Give your brain a break before it steals one

A brain that's never promised a break will just take one. Twenty minutes on, five minutes off. A distraction with its own slot isn't a distraction anymore.

06

Just come back. Skip the lecture

You notice you drifted, you get annoyed at yourself, you drift again to get away from the annoyed. Just come back. The lecture is distraction number two, and it lasts longer.

You don't get distracted because you don't care. You get distracted because everything's invited. Dump it all into my.adhd, get one thing back to start on.
